Timeline Article: Memorial Services Are Held for Titanic

On Friday, April 19th, 1912, England observes a National Day of Mourning for Titanic. Roughly 10,000 people attend a memorial service at St. Paul's cathedral in London.

Those that cannot find room inside pay their respects in the street. The dead are mourned, and prayers of thanks are offered for those who were rescued. 

Churches in other cities are crowded with those paying their respects to the tragedy. 

In Queenstown, flags fly at half-staff to honor all the people of Ireland who will never fulfill their dreams of the new world.

Timeline Article: All Ahead Full!

About an hour after leaving Queenstown, Captain Smith Arrives on the bridge. He gives the order "All ahead full" to First Officer Murdoch. After passing the order on to the officers on the bridge, they signal the engine room. With 26 of the 29 boilers lit, Titanic speeds up to 21 knots and will maintain that speed for the next couple of days. As Titanic cuts her way through the Atlantic, the passengers are impressed at how solid the ship feels and how they couldn't even notice that the ship was moving. A feeling of contentment spread throughout the passengers as Titanic made her way to America.

Thursday, April 11, 1912
1:30pm 

Titanic raises anchor for the last time and makes for open sea. The ship leaves Queenstown with over 700 emigrants in Third Class, most of which are Irish families seeking a better life in America.

Featured Article: The Francis Browne Collection

Francis Browne was one of eight people to disembark at Queenstown. He was a teacher at Belvedere College and was studying for the priesthood at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin. His passage on Titanic was given to him as a gift from his uncle and was traveling with the Lenox-Coyningham and Odell families.

 He snapped some casual pictures aboard Titanic during the trip from Southampton to Queenstown. These pictures are all that exist of Titanic as she was in April, 1912.

Titanic makes her last stop at Queenstown, Ireland. She drops anchor at Cove Harbor, the deep water port at Queenstown. The tenders the Ireland and the America bring aboard 120 passengers, their luggage, and 15 hundred mail bags. Port officials and journalists board as well to take a look at the new ship. Some local vendors selected by Chief Officer Henry Wilde, are allowed to temporarily board the ship. These vendors sell lace and souvenirs to the First class passengers on the promenade deck during the stop. This arrangement provides wealthy customers for the vendors. As the vendors disembark the ship, Wilde receives a tip for allowing the vendors to board.
